MOSFET / SiC Switching Spike & RC/RCD Snubber Calculator
Designed for high-voltage SiC/GaN wide-bandgap and conventional MOSFET power stages. Estimate turn-off inductive overvoltage spikes, check IPC-9592B 85% automotive derating compliance, toggle between pure RC damping vs. RCD clamp snubber, calculate resistor power dissipation, and avoid costly dielectric component pitfalls.
Spike Formula: Peak turn-off voltage V_spike = V_bus + L_loop × (di/dt). With 20nH loop inductance and 100A / 20ns turn-off (di/dt = 5A/ns), inductive overshoot alone is 100V;
IPC-9592B Derating: Peak dynamic spike must remain ≤ 85% of rated breakdown voltage (e.g., ≤1020V for a 1200V SiC device) to prevent avalanche failure;
Topology Selection: Use Pure RC for low-voltage (≤48V) ringing; use RCD Clamp for high-voltage (400V~800V) to prevent massive resistor heat dissipation (P = C·V²·f);
Component Pitfalls: Capacitor voltage rating must be ≥ 1.5×V_bus with mandatory C0G/NP0 or MKP film (never X7R); resistors must be non-inductive thick film (never wirewound).
⚡ Step 1: Turn-Off Inductive Spike Estimation & IPC-9592B Derating Check
Spike & Derating Analysis
| Current Slew Rate (di/dt) | 5.00 A/ns (5000 A/μs) |
| Inductive Overshoot (ΔV = L·di/dt) | 100.0 V |
| Estimated Total Dynamic Spike (Vspike) | 900.0 V |
| IPC-9592B 85% Derating Threshold | 1020.0 V (Rated 1200V × 85%) |
🛠️ Step 2: Snubber Topology Selection & Sizing
RCD Clamp Principle: A fast diode conducts during turn-off, capturing inductive spike energy into the clamp capacitor, which slowly bleeds off through a high-resistance bleed resistor. The resistor never dissipates bus cycling energy, reducing heat loss by 80%~95% compared to pure RC!
RCD Clamp Sizing Results
| Clamp Capacitor Cclamp | — nF |
| Required Capacitor Rating | — (Mandatory C0G/MKP) |
| Bleed Resistor Rclamp | — kΩ |
| Resistor Power Dissipation PR,clamp | — W |
| Diode Reverse Voltage (VRRM) | — |
| Diode Speed Requirement | Ultra-fast trr ≤ 25ns (SiC Schottky recommended) |
High-Voltage Snubber Component Selection Guidelines (Engineering Reality)
Selection Rule: Snubber capacitors must use C0G / NP0 Class-1 ceramics (zero DC bias drop, ultra-low dielectric loss) or metallized polypropylene film (MKP/CBB). Voltage rating must satisfy: V_rated ≥ 1.5 × Vbus.
Selection Rule: Always specify non-inductive thick-film power resistors (e.g., TO-220 or TO-247 packages) or multiple parallel low-inductance surface-mount resistors.
The Fundamental Cure: Route the high-frequency switching loop across vertically overlapping adjacent layers (L1 top trace for DC+, L2 internal ground for return). Opposing magnetic fields cancel out, slashing loop inductance from 25nH to 3~5nH and dropping turn-off voltage spikes by 100V+!
