Design & Sizing Tips
Why is Inertia Important?
When selecting servo motors, stepper motors, or cam indexers, the load's moment of inertia is a critical parameter that determines the system's acceleration capability, response speed, and stability. The inertia ratio (load inertia / motor rotor inertia) is usually recommended to be kept within 1:5 to 1:10.
How to Reduce Moment of Inertia?
As seen from the formula J = 1/2 m r², inertia is proportional to the square of the radius. To reduce inertia:
- Prioritize reducing the outer diameter of the disc.
- Remove material (e.g., drilling holes or adding slots) near the outer edge, as outer mass contributes significantly more to inertia than inner mass.
- Use lighter materials (e.g., replace steel with aluminum).
